Do South Africans decorate fig trees as Christmas trees during Christmas?

I just read in an English Elementary School text book that it is one of our customs. I've never seen this. Have you?

Do South Africans decorate fig trees as Christmas trees during Christmas?
Well, we do, don′t we. They are adorned with green and gold "baubles", commonly known as figs. I′ve just come back from a long, hard day at work, and must thank all of you for your humorous posts, I have been cackling all the way since I signed in to YQ%26amp;A, this evening. And figs trees disguised as Christmas trees, well, that′s the spirit! Keep it up.

Reply:I think you are mistaking the old custom of wearing only fig leaf costumes for Xmas parties. . . .Does that text book also mention that British men beat up their wives after parties for flirting?

Reply:Must be a spelling mistake are you sure you didn't misread FIR and not FIG trees? We use the same trees as anywhere else in the world i.e. Fir trees.

Reply:Nope if we don't have a origional tree you buy an artificial one but lol fig trees are precious - not a lot of fresh figs available lately
