How do you know when a fig on a tree is ripe?

The matured "fruit" has a tough peel (pure green, green suffused with brown, brown or purple), often cracking upon ripeness, and exposing the pulp beneath.

How do you know when a fig on a tree is ripe?
I have a fig tree in my backyard. The figs are usually ripe when the color is a deep dark purple and soft to the touch.
Reply:If it is a black mission fig, it will be very dark purple. Gently squeeze the fig and if it is ripe, it will be very soft
Reply:If it "gives" to gentle pressure it's ripe. If you can squish it with hard/firm pressure - it's also ripe :)

Reply:I've got 2 big fig trees and love them! Okay. Pick (and eat!!) them when the figs become a bit soft and turn just a bit purple. I've eaten them before they've turned - They're just not so tasty. Once the figs begin to "turn" however - pick them fast or the birds will get them! I had never had figs before owning these "trees" - I promise - They are delicious! To me..anyway...!
Reply:My first instinct was to say: when it has a nice purple color (not too green, and not to the point that its almost brown), but I just remembered there are also green figs! I don't know which one you have in your tree, but the best way is to feel it. If its too hard, it's not ripe. If it's soft, it's ripe. Personally I don't like it when they are too soft. Another trick is, if it detaches easily from the branch when you pick it, that means it was probably ready to fall off on its own, which means it was ripe! Goodluck!
