I would like to grow a fig tree.?

Can I have a fig plant from the fig fruit itself? If so, can someone out there helps. Thanks.

I would like to grow a fig tree.?
buy one and plant it
Reply:You probably can, but you'll save yourself a lot of headaches and get figs faster if you get a plant from a nursery.
Reply:I have a fig tree that has been passed down three generations I don't think you can grow one from a fruit but you can split an existing plant in the winter with no harm to the plant.
Reply:I have a very productive fig tree and yes I see small plants sprouting up from fallen fruits.

Also saplings developing around the base of the tree.

I would not recommend either as a suitable stock for growing ,as the new tree will not give the same fruit nor the abundance of fruit as the parent tree. You are likely to get small bitter figs.

It is better to develop a cutting, which will retain the characteristics of the parent plant. But be careful, the juice from the wood of fig trees can be dangerous. Many people (myself included) are allergic to this fluid. I dare not prune my tree because if I get splashed I immediately blister with large extremely painful burn-like sores which last for weeks (and unsightly purple patches long after the skin has grown back). This is not a rare allergy even my cats suffer burns from the liquid. Strangely I get no problems from the fruit.

Another tip if you buy a plant, there are many kinds of fig ranging from small red tasty fruit to huge green sour fruit, so make sure the one you choose is edible.

Also when these plants have matured into large trees the amount of leaves you have to sweep up daily throughout Autumn is truly awesome, a real nuisance
