A fig is a fruit. It's like a date. They grow on palms. Fig Newtons aren't my favorite, but the other Newston cookies are really good.

The fig newton is a cookie that is filled with a filling made from dried figs. I don't know where the name "newton" comes from. You can also get apple newtons, apricot newtons, blueberry newtons.... All the same kind of fruit-filled cookies.
