How do identify the variety of the fig tree I purchased?

This topic came up in one of my horticulture classes the other day... the story goes like this...

Man goes up to a man that has a clipping of a fig tree in his hand...the guy with the clipping knows what kind of fig tree it is and knows how hard it is to identify a fig from its leaf... so the second guy says to him "I bet you $20 i know what kind of fig tree that is just by looking at the leaf." So the man with the clipping says ok... here you go... the other man looks intently at the leaf and says "you have a "brown turkey" ... the man with the cutting looks at him astounded and asks him how he knew because he had never known a guy to be able to tell... the other man says... "Nearly every fig around here is a brown turkey..."

My point is you can't really tell them apart until they fruit... be patient... keep the birds out of it... then take a bunch to your local garden center or a knowledgeable "figgist" and they can help you...
