What's up with Fig Newtons?

When did a Fig Newton become "the cookie that thinks it's a fruit"? I always thought that "it's not a cookie; it's fruit and cake."

What's up with Fig Newtons?
You just can't trust those darn Newtons anymore, can you? They're always so ambiguous:

(irritating squeaky voice)



"I'm a cookie!...No wait, I wanna be a fruitcake......Wait a second, cookies get a better market value....I can't decide!"
Reply:Ha, therein lies the rub. They wanted you to think it was fruit and cake but it thought it was a cookie so it sneaks up and surprises you and you're like "whoa! This fruit and cake thinks it's a cookie so maybe it is" and then you're thinking it's a cookie but you know it thinks its fruit and cake when you're thinking it's a cookie and then one day "SMACK" you get it.
